Sierra Leone

Sewing Seeds International has been working in Sierra Leone, Africa, since 2001. We have a keen desire to help the widows in this war torn country, who were stripped of their families’ income when their husbands were brutally killed in the war.

Our program includes taking women who have never sewn before and training them to be able to efficiently operate a treadle sewing machine and produce wearable, sellable products. This is to enhance their lives by giving them a skill they can be proud of and confident in, which can be used for their own personal benefit of making clothing for themselves and their families, and eventually for sustainable income.

An advanced training program is then offered to the women who show marked ability to produce, and market clothing and accessories in order to generate an income. Micro-credit is available to those women who have the goals and dreams to take their new skill to the next level of opening a business.

We have trained over 70 war widows, plus 30-40 others to date in Africa. This is a sustainable economic development program.

These are the programs that we have implemented in Sierra Leone, Africa:

  1. Feb 2002- taught a 3-week beginner sewing training program to 30 war-widows, and supplied babysitting services to the women.
  2. June 2002- taught a 3-week advanced sewing training program to the same 30 war-widows. Formulated a 2-month training schedule under local supervision. Implemented a Vacation Bible School for 100 children.
