Who We Are

Sewing Seeds International is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping women and children in Sierra Leone, Ukraine, and most recently, Peru. We are committed to empowering through training, mentoring, encouraging, and supporting by offering sewing training programs and children’s programs in these and other developing nations.  By learning how to sew, women are able to start their own businesses, earn money to support their children and create clothing for every member of their family. We believe that the key to helping countries industrialize begins with the women and the grass roots cottage industry of the garment trade.

We are three generations working together on these projects.

Sylvia Rempel is the expert designer who developed the intense sewing training programs that are efficient and effective in producing sustainable skills for the women in the programs. She designs the projects according to the needs of the women in each country and leads the sewing training programs.

Sylvia’s daughter, Tammy (Rempel) Bartel and her husband, J.D. plus their three daughters, Somerlea, Jessalayne, and Elli-Rose have developed and directed all of the children’s programs.

Tammy, J.D. and family direct the sewing and children’s teams incorporating the following tasks:

  • Organize teams, arrange dates, flights and visas for team, book accommodation and transportation, and estimate team expenses.
  • Formulated sewing training schedule and outline daily teaching agenda.
  • Record and pack team, sewing and children’s supplies.
  • Direct children’s program. Conceptualize themes, plan bible stories, crafts, snacks, and games. Collect supplies, and delegate positions.
  • Responsible to oversee both programs, and assist in execution.
  • Implemented lunch program for ladies and children.
  • Interview women and document progress.
  • Facilitate graduation programs- certificates, special gifts, and party.

Most recently Sylvia’s oldest daughter, Angela (Rempel) Grams and her husband, Kelly have joined the team. They have been instrumental in getting the Peru program off the ground. They both have skills in the manufacturing and design industry, and they are a much welcomed addition.
